'CLOSE-UP' PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

4-10 October, The Sackler Centre of Arts Education, Serpentine Gallery

Close-up was an exhibition of self portraits by young people aged 14 to 17 from AYA who worked with artist Farina Graham. It was held at The Sackler Centre of Arts Education at the Serpentine Gallery in London.

Farina was invited by the Gallery to lead the group of young people in a programme of summer activities based at AYA’s offices. She devised a series of practical workshops (led in partnership with artist Jonathan Griffin), group discussions and exhibition visits to explore themes of identity and self-representation. The group, who had no photographic experience, also learned software manipulation techniques and other skills. They each produced about 100 images from which they selected one for exhibition.

Close-up was supported by Bloomberg with additional support from the Home Office Refugee Integration Unit.

About Farina Graham
Farina has been a practicing artist for the last twelve years and is presently based in London. She trained as a printmaker during her undergraduate degree programme at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi, Pakistan. In 1998, she joined the postgraduate programme of Fine Art in Media, at the Slade School of Fine Art in London.

She works in the medium of computer graphics, sound production, film and creative writing. She is interested in addressing disparities between eastern and western ideas of ‘foreign’; and the notion of the ‘other’ as understood through western perspectives.

Presently Farina teaches art at a number of London colleges.

Galeria Serpentine në bashkëpunim me një grup të rinjsh nga Albanian Youth Action ka përgatitur një ekspozitë me autoportrete të frymëzuar nga ekspozitat e Cindy Sherman dhe John Currin në Serpentine.

Serpentine ftoi fotografen Farina Graham të marrë udhëheqjen e grupit me të rinj nga mosha 14 deri 17 vjeç për një program me veprimtari verore me bazë në qendrën e Albanian Youth Action në Vauxhall. Ajo ngriti disa grupe pune praktike dhe diskutimesh si dhe organizoi disa vizita në ekspozita për të hetuar tema të identitetit dhe paraqitjes së vetvetes.

Grupi që nuk kishte përvojë pune fotografike përdori fotografi shifrore dhe programin kompjuterik Photoshop në përpunimin përfundimtar të figurave. Secili prej pjesëmarrësve bëri një numër të madh figurash dhe prej tyre zgjodhi njërën për ta ekspozuar në Galeri.

Albanian Youth Action punon për t’u ndihmuar refugjatëve shqipfolës që të përshtaten me jetesën në Mbretërinë e Bashkuar dhe për të zhvilluar mundësitë vetjake pa i humbur lidhjet me kulturën e vet. Organizohet nga Galeria Serpentine në bashkëpunim me Albanian Youth Action.
